Which Ninja CREAMi Program Should I Use?

Find the right Ninja CREAMi program for ice cream, sorbet, frozen yogurt, protein recipes and more, including fallbacks when your machine lacks the exact button.

Choose the program from the base and intended result, not from the flavour name. Follow the recipe’s tested button first. If your machine does not have that exact program, use the compatibility and fallback table before substituting.

A different button cannot make an unsafe, partially frozen, overfilled or fundamentally unbalanced base suitable for processing.

Quick chooser

  1. Is the recipe a drink? Use Milkshake only when the recipe follows your machine’s milkshake workflow, typically combining ice cream with milk without freezing a new pint first. Use Frozen Drink, Slushi, Creamiccino or Frappé only when the recipe and your machine support that workflow.
  2. Do you want a Swirl soft-serve output? On a model that offers it, select Soft Serve mode, then choose the soft-serve program specified by the recipe. Otherwise use Scoop mode and the stated scoop program.
  3. Are fruit and water the structural base? Choose Sorbet for a sweetened, fruit-forward scoopable base.
  4. Is sweetened yogurt the main creamy ingredient? Choose Frozen Yogurt when available and when the recipe is built for it.
  5. Is it a custard-style recipe? Choose Gelato when specified.
  6. Is it a classic rich dairy or dairy-alternative ice cream? Choose Ice Cream.
  7. Is it deliberately lower in fat or sugar, uses substitutes, or is a formulated protein recipe? Choose Lite/Light Ice Cream unless the tested recipe specifies CreamiFit on CREAMi XL or Swirl.
  8. Are pieces being added after processing? Use Mix-In, not a second main program.

Choose by recipe type

Practical first choice by prepared recipe
Prepared baseFirst choiceCheck before pressing Start
Classic dairy ice creamIce CreamRich, sweetened and fully frozen; not simply milk frozen solid.
Low-fat or lower-sugar ice creamLite/Light Ice CreamUse a formulated recipe; sugar and fat affect freezing and texture.
High-protein baseLite Ice Cream, or CreamiFit when the recipe and machine support itProtein powder alone does not guarantee a processable base.
Fruit-forward, water-based baseSorbetFruit should be crushed or blended with its liquid; never process loose frozen fruit.
Frozen yogurtFrozen Yogurt when available; Lite Ice Cream otherwiseUse the fallback only with a compatible tested recipe.
Gelato-style custardGelatoThe recipe should be a compatible custard-style base.
Dairy-free ice creamIce Cream or Lite Ice CreamChoose from the recipe’s fat and sugar profile, not the absence of dairy.
Creamy fruit base with dairy or a dairy alternativeFollow the tested Ice Cream or Lite Ice Cream recipeFruit flavour alone does not make a creamy base a Sorbet recipe.
MilkshakeMilkshakeFollow your machine’s workflow, typically combining ice cream with milk without freezing a new pint.
Pieces to addMix-In after the main cycleUse small prepared pieces; skip Re-spin first if Mix-In will follow.
Soft-serve output on a SwirlSelect Soft Serve mode, then the soft-serve program specified by the recipeUse a base formulated for dispensing and the parts made for Swirl.

Tested examples are available in the high-protein, under-100-calorie, sorbet and dairy-free collections.

Choose by intended result

Firm and scoopable

On a Swirl, select Scoop, then use the program stated by the recipe. On other machines, choose Ice Cream, Lite Ice Cream, Sorbet, Gelato or Frozen Yogurt only when that button is present. A dry first spin may need a correctly judged Re-spin, not a different main program.

Spoon-thick fruit bowl

Use Smoothie Bowl only when your machine provides it and the recipe was designed for a thick, spoonable result. If the button is absent, there is no universal one-button equivalent.

Drinkable

Use Milkshake with your machine’s workflow, typically prepared ice cream plus milk. Frozen Drink, Slushi and coffee programs use different bases or pour-ins and are not interchangeable by name.

Dispensed soft serve

On a compatible Swirl model, select Soft Serve mode, then choose the soft-serve program specified by the recipe. Only use a base formulated for dispensing; not every Scoop recipe is suitable for soft serve.

Check your machine

Program availability, capacities and accessories differ between Ninja CREAMi Original, Deluxe, CREAMi XL and Swirl. Check the buttons and owner guide for your machine. Use Ninja CREAMi Programs Explained for program purposes, the compatibility and fallback guide for missing buttons, and the Original vs Deluxe vs Swirl comparison for hardware differences.

When the exact program is missing

Use this order:

  1. Check the buttons and owner guide for your machine.
  2. Use the compatibility and fallback table to identify an exact, close or approximate option.
  3. If no reliable fallback exists, use a recipe written for the programs and capacity available on that machine.

Two common practical fallbacks are deliberately conditional:

  • on a machine without Frozen Yogurt, use Lite Ice Cream for a compatible tested frozen-yogurt recipe;
  • on a machine without CreamiFit, a compatible protein recipe may remain scoopable on Lite Ice Cream, but it will not reproduce an aerated soft-serve output.

These are inferred recipe choices, not official program equivalences.

When program choice is not the real problem

Stop and correct the preparation when:

  • the pint is not frozen solid or froze at an angle;
  • the base exceeds MAX FILL;
  • the surface of refrozen leftovers is uneven;
  • the ingredients are loose frozen pieces, ice cubes or a block of plain ice;
  • the pint, lid, paddle or dispensing parts do not belong to that machine;
  • the base was not formulated for dispensing as soft serve;
  • the base is so low in sugar, fat and solids that no tested recipe supports it.

The texture troubleshooting guide separates program issues from water, sugar, fat and solids problems. The common mistakes guide covers preparation and assembly.

Frequently asked questions

Should a protein recipe use Lite Ice Cream or CreamiFit?

Use CreamiFit only when your machine provides it and the recipe was designed for that scoopable or soft-serve result. Otherwise follow the tested recipe, commonly Lite Ice Cream for a scoopable protein base.

Should dairy-free ice cream use Sorbet?

Not automatically. A coconut, oat or nut-based creamy recipe may suit Ice Cream or Lite Ice Cream. Sorbet is for a fruit-forward, water-and-sugar structure.

What replaces Frozen Yogurt when that program is unavailable?

Use Lite Ice Cream as the catalogue fallback for a compatible tested frozen-yogurt recipe. This is an inferred practical alternative, not an official program equivalence.

Which button should be used for leftovers?

For refrozen leftovers, follow the owner guide for your machine. Several Ninja support guides recommend repeating the original program rather than using Re-spin, while other guidance differs. Drinkable outputs may require an additional pour-in, and reprocessing may crush mix-ins further.
